##What's this?
For a long time I've been thinking about ways to spend less time on line, for a whole list of reasons that I'll probably describe on this journal in due course. Last year I got rid of the last vestiges of my presence on anything which looks like social media, installed a minimalist launcher on my phone, blocked the web browser except for short periods, moved the sim out of my 'smart' phone to a simple phone with a wifi hotspot.
In the last couple of weeks I've started using IRC again for the first time in decades and accessing BBSes. Next, I had heard of Gopher 30+ years ago but I hadn't used it at the time so I did some research, and from Gopher it was a short step to finding Gemini. It feels like the thing, or one of the things, I've been looking for.
I'll keep this short, on the basis that it's a first post and mostly I want to know how it looks when it's published, but also because I don't suppose anyone is going to read it. My aim (apart from being more intentional when I'm on line) is to write more, and this seems to be a great place to do it. I really like the philosophy of the Small Internet, and of being a part of something counter-cultural. I'm not chasing hits or likes or comments, so this seems to be perfect.
