Radio Romania International (part two)

Listening to Radio Romania International live, via shortwave radio, using online software defined radios

In part 1 of this post I explained how you can listen to the English service of Radio Romania International via its website:

Radio Romania International (part one)

In this second part I'm going to explain how you can listen to RRI's live shortwave broadcasts, even if you don't have a radio receiver, using an online software defined radio, or SDR. This is a hardware device attached to an antenna and to a computer via USB. This is relatively simple and low cost because a lot of the clever signal processing and filtering which can be expensive to do in hardware is easy and cheap in software. However, to try out this technology immediately and at zero cost we can use online SDRs, shared via the internet by radio enthusiasts, with web front ends which allow you to use your browser to tune them to the station you want to hear.

Broadcasts to Western Europe - times in UTC

I want to make this as simple as possible, so I suggest you use the Twente University SDR in The Netherlands to listen to one of the broadcasts to Western Europe. These are at various times through the day, so even if you live outside of Europe you should find one which suits you.

These links will open the Twente SDR and tune it to the correct frequency for each transmission time:

06:30 - 07:30 9620 kHz
06:30 - 07:30 9870 kHz (alternate)

28th Oct 06.30 used 17780 kHz (published frequency for India):

06:30 - 07:30 17780 kHz

12:00 - 13:00 15460 kHz
12:00 - 13:00 17700 kHz (alternate)

25th October 12.00 used 17800 kHz (published frequency for Africa):

12:00 - 13:00 17800 kHz

18:00 - 19:00 9570 kHz (Digital Radio Mondiale, not receivable on normal SDRs and radios)
18:00 - 19:00 9770 kHz (alternate)

21:30 - 22:00 7375 kHz
21:30 - 22:00 6030 kHz (alternate)

23:00 - 00:00 7220 kHz
23:00 - 00:00 6030 kHz (alternate)

For reference, here is the RRI English schedule page for winter 2026/27, starting on 25 October and ending on 28 March 2027 and showing all of the English broadcasts:

RRI English - winter 2026/27 schedule

However, as at the date of posting some of the broadcasts either aren't happening or they are using frequencies which are not listed. For example, on the 25th of October the lunchtime transmission to Europe was on the published frequency for Africa, so it may be that RRI hasn't settled into the new schedule yet.

I wrote a much longer version of this post, with instructions on using other SDRs elsewhere in the world, but I decided it was too long for anyone to read. I've checked these instructions and links carefully, but if anything doesn't work then please let me know and I'll try to help. In particular, receiving DRM broadcasts is a little more complicated than AM, but if anyone really wants to try I'll send you some instructions.
